TONY CHESS and EDDIE CHESS are sat at a table. They look ANNOYED but somewhat humbled. Standing over them his TONY CHESS’ mother QUEENIE ‘PRINCESS’ CHESS.
QUEENIE CHESS
You two make me sick. You running around with that barmaid –
TONY CHESS and EDDIE CHESS look at EACH OTHER in a ‘which one is she talking about?’ way.
QUEENIE CHESS (cont)
And you…pretending that the ‘it ‘e’d put owt on ya ‘ad been a success. He were right to send someone with a shootah after ya. ‘E’s a grown man. ‘E can’t be expected to get some respect with ‘is own farvah top man on the patch.
TONY CHESS
Queenie, you can’t be sayin wot I fink yer sayin’ – you want me dead?
QUEENIE CHESS
God love ya Tony Chess I would wish yer dead for what you’ve dan to me ovah the years but I aint sayin’ that. I’m sayin that yer imasculated yer son by not lettin’ ‘is ‘it man at least put you in a coma.
EDDIE CHESS
Granmaaa….don’t fight my battles.
QUEENIE CHESS
Well someone’s gotta Eddie – you can’t even put a simple ‘it out on ya old man.
TONY CHESS gets up and walks out.
EDDIE CHESS
Ma, I didn’t want to say it in front of Dad but…I didn’t put the ‘it out on –
QUEENIE CHESS (interrupting)
I know son. I know you didn’t ‘ire the ‘it on ya farvah because it was…it was me. I ‘ired Lenny to take ya farva out the game. I knew about ‘im and Gloria G’Lamore from The King’s Arms. If yer Ma found out she’d fall apart.
EDDIE CHESS
But I don’t understand GranMaaaa. Why did I think I’d done it? And why did I act surprised when Gloria told me even though at that point I did fink I’d done it?
QUEENIE CHESS
D’ant overthink it son. Yer’ve tried mixing it up and you learned a lesson or two. But I’m afraid there’s not going to be any more lessons –
QUEENIE CHESS raises a gun from under the table and points it at EDDIE CHESS.
QUEENIE CHESS (cont)
Sorry Eddie. Not being able to kill someone is a weakness the Chess family can’t accomodate. I’m afraid it’s curtains for you.
EDDIE CHESS
Don’t do it….I can kill someone…anyone…
QUEENIE CHESS
I’m afraid I don’t believe ya, Eddie. And If you had killed ya farvah then I’d be in the same boat because you’d ‘ave killed my saaaan. The boats called ‘Killing Eddie Chess’ Eddie.
We see that Queenie’s finger is tightening on the trigger. EDDIE is sweating, he seems to have accepted his fate. QUEENIE looks determined – determined to kill her Grandson for failing to kill her son. We look at EDDIE again. At QUEENIE AGAIN. We hear a clock ticking. As it looks like the trigger is going to be pulled…END CREDITS
