Yelena Isinbayeva thinks that maybe Russian people are different from other people (who aren’t rampantly homophobic). The I hope she appreciates the irony of the world isolating Russian people and choosing not to allow them to openly express their views – if it happened. It won’t happen though because most people realise that trying to crush sexuality doesn’t make something go away.
You’d think in 2013 an intolerant homophobe would at least be open to other people wearing nail varnish that suggested they didn’t believe in the same rampant homophobia. Not Yelena Isinbayeva: “We are very afraid about our nation because we consider ourselves normal, standard people,” she homophobed, failing to realise that in this context normal and standard both mean the same thing.
Not afraid of saying the same thing twice Isinbayeva added, “We just live with boys with women, women with boys.” Swapping the words around in the phrase ‘boys with women’ adds nothing. If anything it makes it sound like she is implying something slightly more diverse than one way of life. Perhaps she will be hung.
Fair play to Jonathan Edwards for not just laying into the individual, like I did, and pointing out that her hate is merely a symptom of the society that has produced/agrees with her.
There’s an argument that boycotting things in Russia means the world isn’t taking the chance to convince them they are wrong by granting them publicity and not doing anything about it. It’s not really an argument – it’s just me saying what is happening. Is it fair to deny people the choice to compete in sports because of a political thought? Well why not just say that it’s not all political thoughts the sporting world judges, just ones where they say certain people aren’t equal.
