TOWN SQUARE AVENUE – EPISODE 2

EDDIE CHESS is stood at the bar of THE KING’S ARMS. GLORIA G’LAMORE, the glamorous barmaid, is crying behind the bar. It’s a dignified and Eastend cry.

EDDIE CHESS
Gloria, what’s the matter darling?
GLORIA G’LAMORE
It’s Tony…he’s….he’s dead!
EDDIE CHESS
Your husband is dead? Gloria, you have to shut the Arms –
GLORIA G’LAMORE [interrupting]
No, not Tony. Other Tony.
EDDIE CHESS
I’m sorry Gloria, I don’t know another Tony. Apart from…..
GLORIA G’LAMORE
Yes Eddie – Tony Chess, your grandfather and unofficial patriarch of Town Square Avenue. He’s dead.
EDDIE CHESS
Not me old man’s old man. I don’t know what to think. I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to do…I need to speak to the Duchess.

THE DOOR of THE KING’S ARMS slams open. EDDIE CHESS and GLORIA G’LAMORE look at the opened door. But there is no-one there.

EDDIE CHESS
I thought for a moment it was…I thought he was going to walk in the door like he always did.
GLORIA G’LAMORE
He aint coming back into the door Eddie. And he aint ever getting back in my bed now he’s gone. The only man getting in my bed is you, Eddie Chess.
EDDIE CHESS
You’re right Gloria. He ain’t coming back and it’s time for me to step up and admit it was me who ordered the hit on him. I was fed up of him and I needed to take Town Square Avenue for my own. He was gettin’ old and slow. People were taking the Chess family for past their sell by date.  And I didn’t like the way he was treating you, the way we have an affair is different. I love you Gloria. That’s why I had to take Tony Chess out –

GLORIA and EDDIE are distracted by the sound of a match being struck. They look into the shadow of the pub’s open door and see a cigarette being lit. The glow of the cigarette isn’t enough to show the face of the mysterious smoker. He blows a plume of smoke and then slowly steps forward through the smoke. We cut back to faces of TONY CHESS and GLORIA G’LAMORE. Their eyes widen and mouths open in unison as the man walks through the smoke and his face is lit by the light of the pub’s light….

TONY CHESS (because IT’S HIM – HE ISN’T DEAD!!!)
Did ya now Eddie? Aint much of an ‘it that is it?
